Digital ethics focuses on respecting the user’s autonomy and mental health.
ANTI-DARK PATTERNS
Commit to "Honest Design." No tricking users into subscriptions, hidden costs, or "roach motel" account deletions.
DATA PRIVACY
Use the principle of data minimization. Only collect what is strictly necessary (like your current Google Forms setup).
INCLUSIVITY & ACCESSIBILITY
Ensure the site exceeds WCAG 2.2 standards, providing an equitable experience for users with visual, auditory, or motor impairments.
COGNITIVE WELL-BEING
Design for "Intentionality." Avoid features that exploit dopamine loops.
UX decisions often have real-world consequences on physical communities.
SUPPLY CHAIN TRANSPARENCY
If the UX involves physical goods, provide clear, easy-to-find links to anti-slavery and labor ethics statements.
THE "OFFLINE" EXPERIENCE
Consider the safety and dignity of people interacting with the product in the physical world (e.g., delivery drivers, gig workers, or neighbors).
EQUITY OF ACCESS
Ensure the experience works on low-end devices and slow 3G/4G connections, not just the latest high-end hardware.
The internet accounts for roughly 4% of global carbon emissions. UX design can directly reduce this.
Low-Carbon Design:
OPTIMIZE IMAGES:
Use smaller size or specific formats to reduce data transfer.
DARK MODE SUPPORT
Options commonly found in browsers, saves energy on OLED screens.
STEAMLINED USER JOURNEYS
The faster a user finds what they need, the less energy the server, device, and human consume.
Green Internet:
GOOGLE SITES
is a head start, as Google aims to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy, but minimizing "bloat" (unused scripts/heavy files) is still key.
GREEN BROWSERS
Browsers are a leader of digital sustainability, contributing to reducing bloat and minimizing negative environmental impact.
HARDWARE LONGEVITY
Design software that remains functional on older devices to reduce e-waste and the "upgrade cycle."
